Old Dreams
Unwelcome sand filled my chest, weighing my lungs as tears fell down my face.
Toiling beneath persuasive words, I frantically tried to build a bridge to your heart,
But each utterance fell heavy, every brick sinking
under the current of your conviction.
My clenched, battered heart fought to release what was not its to hold.
Nights passed as truth and fear wrestled in my mind - each round a new victor.
Weary were my solemn eyes as memories repeatedly erected themselves
only to be met by reality, that persistent brute,
who slowly demolished the happy city in my heart --
Oh, that loyal stronghold.
